On the Mind : Evan Roth

Jonathan Brilliant is setting up for THINGS in the 103 gallery.

Aside from watching a variety of objects assemble themselves (including a delightfully skewed set of student desks and a shelf of crocheted donuts), listening to Brilliant talk while he works in the gallery is one of the more entertaining parts of the day.

One of the Brilliant gems from today (Was that a really bad pun? Yeh?) is the work of Evan Roth, an artist cum open source web nerd who makes a fine craft at the intersection of divine geekdom and street level art. Among his notable work Eye Writer, a program that allows paralyzed artists to create images through movements in their eye, Hip Hop Pop Ups an embedded player of Kanye’s Graduation album which launches pop up windows for each of his product placed laced lyrics, and white glove tracking and manipulation from Michael Jackson’s 2007 performance of Billy Jean.

You may be familiar with some other applications of Roth’s work including those nifty laser projections you’ve seen at several Charleston events in addition to the L.E.D. “throwies” that popped up around town last winter.

See more of Evan Roth’s work on his website, including a free downloadable book of his work aptly named Download Online for Free. -CM

There are only so many times a year you can dress like Teen Wolf

…Or enjoy half the nonsense you enjoyed at the Dark Arts Ball. We promise we won’t tell though, unless the photos do.

Photos by the wonderful Kevin Hoth and Austin Nelson are here. Spot your mug and purchase to make the photos yours forever (or to destroy the evidence). -CM

Meet the Debutantes – Conrad Guevara

Name: Conrad Guevara
Age: 23
Hometown: North Charleston, for real
Medium: yarn, batting, canvas

How did you get your start?
I have always been into drawing and painting.  I went to CofC for fine art and got really into printmaking and sculpture.
Tell us about your work.
The work for this show is something really different from my previous work.  It’s made of yarn I found on the street.  I taught myself how to crochet and decided to use the yarn in an installation. It’s soft, brightly colored, and silly. I wanted to make something cutesy and kind of gross.
What’s your creative process?
For this project I didn’t start with any pre-planning.  I zoned out and started making the form.  Then I played around with making the form bend and change shape. I am way more into the process of making something than the actual piece once its finished.  There is something about focusing on a repetitive task.  Maybe I should do factory work.
Which artists inspire you?
I spend most of my time looking at other people’s work.  My influences are all over.  For this project I looked at Ernesto Neto and Sarah Applebaum.  I’m really into Chris Johanson and Aurel Schmidt.
What song or album would be the soundtrack to your art?
Glass Candy- “Animal Imagination”……….so good

What type of debutante are you: trashy-teen-soap-deb or classic-Southern-belle-deb?
A little bit of both
How has your art evolved over the years?
At CofC I did a lot of figurative prints.  I got really into the printing process.  I like making things that are really time consuming.  I felt kind of stuck with the print work because it is black and white and my images were really serious. The work for this show is still really involved, but it is also really silly and very colorful.
If you could collaborate with any local artist, who would you pick?
It’s a tie between Manning Williams and Anson Cyr.
You’re on a desert island. You can only bring three things with you. What are they?
karaoke machine, shotgun, and my dog
Are you going to rock a corsage at The Debutante Show?
Oh yes.  It’s going to be sick.

Meet the Debutantes – Andrae Harrison

Name: Andrae Harrison
Age: 27
Hometown: Charleston, South Carolina via Queens, New York
Medium: Traditional/Digital  The pieces being showed are oil

How did you get your start?
My mother used to doodle inside the covers of my Sesame Street books, while she was on the phone.

Tell us about your work.
My work deals with whatever I’m dealing with at that moment.  I believe the viewer sees whatever he/she wants to see,  but for me its all in the process.  Yes, I do have a ruff idea about what I want, but it becomes an almost lifetime journey while creating. A constant meet up at the crossroads.  Where I have to decide which road i will choose.

What’s your creative process?
Find Inspiration and do work!

Which artists inspire you?
Artists or should I say motivated individuals inspire me.

What song or album would be the soundtrack to your art?

Shy Fx “This Style”

What type of debutante are you: trashy-teen-soap-deb or classic-Southern-belle-deb?
Trashy used to be teen deb with a Southern Belle Swagger.  To Cool for School.

How has your art evolved over the years?
My craftsmanship gets tighter while my ambitions get larger.

If you could collaborate with any local artist, who would you pick?
Hate Money, Hex, Bars, Davis Auld, Autumn Germroth, Jonathan Green Oh yeah and if Pixel would have me.

You’re on a desert island. You can only bring three things with you. What are they?
My girl, a working fishing pole, and a solar powered computer with the Adobe suite.

Are you going to rock a corsage at The Debutante Show?
How about No!

Meet the Debutantes – Trever Webster

Get to know the Eye Level Art Debutantes before your see their work Friday night.

Their dresses are pressed, white gloves laid out and the paint’s just about to dry before we open the doors of the 103 Gallery and welcome the future of Charleston’s art community.

Over the next few days we’ll post interviews (whipped up by our charming intern Lisa Ryan) with the Debutantes as they get ready for the opening Friday night.

/ /

Name: Trever Webster
Age: 29
Hometown: Madison, Wisconsin
Medium: Mixed

How did you get your start?
I took pride in my art when I was a little one. I would take elementary art projects and turn them into bizzare little stories that I could show my friends/family. Got into comic books, graffiti, painting and experimenting with all kinds of art supplies.

Tell us about your work.
It’s a lot of numbers, color, one shot, and wood panels.

What’s your creative process?
Think about it too much and eventually throw paint at it.

Which artists inspire you?
Salvador Dali, Ralph Steadman, Chris Ware, David A. Carter,

What song or album would be the soundtrack to your art?
That’s a tough one…Midnite Vultures.

What type of debutante are you: trashy-teen-soap-deb or classic-Southern-belle-deb?
Midwest-loves horses-deb.

How has your art evolved over the years?
It’s become a lot less objective. I started telling the story in a more subtle way, using scale, collage and the process.

If you could collaborate with any local artist, who would you pick?
Seth Corts, Tim Hussey , Lisa Shimko, I could go on. I love Collaborations and there are a lot of cool artists in town.

You’re on a desert island. You can only bring three things with you. What are they?
iPod, Headphones, magical iPod charger.

Are you going to rock a corsage at The Debutante Show?
No

Eye Level Art Exhibit Explores Heidegger’s Essay

hand drawn 1

Eye Level Art opens its doors to thirteen artists exploring renown philosopher Martin Heidegger’s seminal essay “Das Ding” in Things, a two-week-long sculptural exhibit.

Featuring works from South Carolina locals Jarod Charzewski, Michael Moran, Michael Morrison, Ashley Harwood, Philip Estes, Daniel McSweeney, David Whalen, Sean Aher, Jonathan Brilliant and Sean Williams, as well as Oregon-native Owen Premore and California artists James Morgan and Sarah Lowe, the exhibit expounds upon Heidegger’s idea of the thing as a gathering force for community.

Though the artists will utilize both functional and non-functional objects in their works, the gallery itself will transform into one of their “things,” functioning as both a gathering force for art, as well as a gathering force for the community.

There will be an opening reception for the ground-breaking exhibit on November 21 at the 103 Gallery at 103 Spring Street. The exhibit will run for two weeks. – LR
